Game 6: Grizzlies 109 Warriors 104

In a disappointing effort for the second time this week, the Warriors fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 109-104 in front of their home crowd. This game undeniably had its excuses with Maggette missing his second consecutive game, and Harrington missing the game because of "back issue," but the fact of the matter is the Warriors lost twice to a supposedly inferior team early on in the season. How can a team with playoff aspirations fall to a team playing so many rookies and youngsters? It seems to me that the team is completely lost at this point, with so many younger players getting playing time for the first time, our rotation constantly changing, and of course the controversial Al Harrington trade situation. Through 6 games this team has yet to find an identity, and I don't think they will until they get rid of Harrington and Don Nelson decides exactly how he's going to play this roster. But enough with my rant, here's a summary of what we learned tonight:

I can't really say we played poorly tonight. The Grizzlies seemed to be on fire in the second half, particularly Rudy Gay who just hit some insane shots. I thought we had a few breakdowns with Hakim Warrick getting some easy buckets, but other than that I thought the defense was OK. It seemed like we just didn't keep up with them in the 3rd quarter offensively when Memphis scored 33 points, while the Warriors only scored 24. We didn't turn the ball over much (12), our PG play was decent and we finished with 18 assists, we were badly out-rebounded but it didn't seem to me like it was a huge game changer. Anyway, we made a few runs down the stretch but it just wasn't enough. It's hard to really put your finger on what we did wrong this game. I'd hate to admit it, but we just actually looked like the inferior team.

I'll move on to the positives for the night since it seemed Nelson was completely willing to use the bench tonight. Had we won of course, this would've been huge for our youngsters and our "depth" but nonetheless I'll point out some performances so we can take something positive from the outcome--

Wright started the game tonight but wasn't spectacular. He did finish the night with 3 blocked shots, but he seemed to force it after his huge game the other night. I think he needs to let the game come to him a bit more next time around

Randolph had a huge game in my opinion. If nothing else, he showed he has the courage to play out there with the big boys in big situations. He certainly didn't shy away from shots and I'm glad he didn't! He was nailing the top of the key jumper with ease... I hope Nelson continues to give him some minutes, even when Magette gets back just to see what he can do.

Marcus Williams had an OK first performance. I was intrigued by the way he initiated offense and was looking to dish it off. His jumpshots were rather ugly though, but if he can improve that or shy away from it a bit and really keen in on getting guys good shots, he can be huge for this team.

Lastly, Belinelli didn't play great. He wasn't bad... He just didn't use his minutes wisely. Rather than stand around the 3pt line I'd like to see him cut to the basket and move around a bit more.

Top Performances
1. Andris Biedrins- What can I say, 23 points and 12 boards, he's becoming a monster. It's a shame we keep losing
2.CJ Watson- His FG% was ugly but he finished the night with 9 points, 8 assists, and 8 boards. That's a solid game for a PG to say the least
3.Anthony Randolph- I loved his confidence out there, and thought it was a great opening performance. He finished the game with 8 points and 7 boards in just 17 minutes

I'm really hoping to see some changes come the next game. When the season started I did not expect to be 2-4 after our first 6 games.

Andrew -

Can't comment much tonight, as the game was blacked out (don't know why) in the L.A. area. Heard the fourth quarter on XM, though....
1. Somebody needs to come in and give a free shot shooting clinic to these guys. When your best free throw shooter is AB, you're in big trouble.
2. Jax needs more rest. Wouldn't mind seeing Azabuke at SG, with
Randolph and Wright playing the forward positions while Jax is on the bench. Good rebounding up front, long bodies for defense, and can still run the floor pretty fast.
3. A bit bummed to hear that Hendrix is going to be D-listed for the better part of the season; but, how many forwards can you get in a game anyway?
Do you have any opinion(s) as to which rumored trade the Ws shold make re: Harrington? I think a PG would be best in return, although a true PF would not be too bad either.
Have you thought about putting some "feelers" in some of the online newspaper sports sections to divert more readers to your blog? Was thinking sfgate.com, contracostatime.com, and sanjosemercurynews.com for starters.
Keep up the good work......

Nice wrap Andrew. I want to talk about the Gerald Wallace trade rumors. I'm a big fan of Wallace. He plays D, is athletic, and rebounds extremely well for his size. According to some sources, he is on the table and Rowell isn't taking him. http://www.hoopsworld.com/HeadlineStories.asp?lc=NBA&c=1&TEAM_ID=&PLAYER_ID=&hd=20081108#STORY_13655

IMO, Maggettee was a bad signing. I didn't like it from the beginning, and I still don't. I like how he gets to the line and makes his FT, but his shooting is so inconsistent and his D is suspect. He's also clogging up the Wallace trade. IMO, we would have been fine with starting Azubuike, LOOK AT HIS NUMBERS!

Extending Jax!!!! That's the thing that really drives me nuts about Rowell. If Chris was still running the show, he would be smart enough to realize that Jax should not be a part of this team in 3-5 years. He's 30 already.

Back to Gerald: Wallace just turned 26 in July, so he's not old by any means. He's got 4 years left for 9.5 per year. For his production, that is a very reasonable contract IMO. He would also fit well with Nellie's system because he could play the 3 or 4 depending on who's in the game.

IMO, if I could trade Marco and Harrington for GWall, it seems like it would be a no brainer as long as you don't extend Jax, but apparently not.

A lineup of:
Pg-Monta
Sg-Jax
Sf-Maggette
Pf-Wallace
C-Biedrins

This trade would make us contenders IMO.

What do you think about it?

Hey guys, sorry for the late response, it's been a weird busy weekend.

Nocal Fred--opinions on rumored trades... My biggest opinion is that we need to do something ASAP. Whichever rumored trade it is, we need to get it done now because Harrington is becoming a cancer on this team and frankly, I'm getting sick of him. Obviously, I want nothing to do with Eddy Curry. LOL. However, if we could pry David Lee out of NY that would be huge. I'm also a fan of Gerald Wallace and think he's a solid young player but I'm not sure he fits with this team because he would have to be a PF...

Help me out with your other comment, what do you mean by feelers? If you mean promoting my site on other website to generate more readers, well... I used to have more. I was promoting on GSOM, Warriorsworld, San Jose Mercury News, and RealGM... However i was told on San Jose Mercury News and RealGM to stop promoting on their sites for one reason or another. Did you have something else in mind? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Perhaps I should just give the forums on those other newspaper sites a try but they usually hate self promoters.

Anonymous--I'll agree with you on a few things. If we were to pursue Gerald Wallace then yes, Maggette was a bad signing. Also, Jackson's extension isn't a great idea by any means and I've explained myself on that one a few times already. I like Wallace... actually I like all those SF type guys who can play great D and drive to the basket. Wallace is certainly one of those guys. I also think Wallace is one of the best guys out there that we can trade Harrington for. However, I'm not sure Wallace would work with this team, because I'm not interested in seeing him play full-time at PF. That's why it sucks about the Maggette signing for this situation. Ultimately we would be a better team with Wallace in there instead of Harrington but I don't really want to see Jackson, Maggette, and Wallace there for the next 3-4 years when theyre all essentially the same size and all pretty much SF type players
